Tips for the Best Ever Orange Chocolate Chip Muffins
- Collect all of your ingredients to prepare for the recipe.
- Bring the Eggs to Room Temperature before starting.
- Make sure you Soften the Butter before beginning.
- Use a Microplane to zest your oranges. (Related: The Many Uses of a Microplane). Orange Zest is a key ingredient for that fresh orange flavor, so don’t skip this!
- Use good quality chocolate chips. I like dark chocolate better than milk chocolate in this recipe!
- Reserve a handful of chocolate chips and sprinkle a few chocolate chips on top of the batter before baking.
- Stir in the flour by hand using a wooden spoon. Muffins batters should not be beaten; this can lead to tough muffins.

Can I Make this Orange Chocolate Muffin Gluten-Free?
Yes, you can totally make this orange muffin recipe gluten-free!
When I want to convert a muffin recipe to gluten-free, the method I use is to replace half of the flour with Almond Flour and the other half of the flour with Cup for Cup Multi-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour.
TIP: Make sure your almond flour and chocolate chips are certified gluten-free.
Substitution Suggestions for this Chocolate Orange Muffin Recipe
- Chocolate Chips: If you don’t have chocolate chips, you can substitute a chocolate bar that has been chopped into bite sized pieces.
- All Purpose Flour: You can substitute a whole wheat baking flour for all purpose flour if you prefer.
- Buttermilk: Don’t have any buttermilk? Check out by tutorial on How to Make Buttermilk.
- Butter: You can substitute ghee for butter in this recipe. You may be able to substitute canola oil, however I have not tested that in this recipe.
- Orange Zest: for a completely different flavor profile, try using lemon juice and lemon zest in place of the orange. With this substitution, however, I recommend using white chocolate chips instead of dark chocolate because I think it pairs better with the lemon flavor.
- Chocolate: You could easily substitute dried cranberries or dried cherries for the chocolate in this recipe if you don’t like chocolate or don’t have any.
How to Store these Orange Chocolate Chip Muffins
If you’d like to make a double or triple batch to have on hand throughout the week, these muffins will store fine at room temperature for a few days. I like to use an airtight container.
Here are my storage instructions for this Orange Chocolate Chip Muffin recipe.
STEP ONE: First, transfer the muffins to a cooling rack and allow them to cool completely. Storing warm muffins will leave you with a lot of excess moisture on your muffins due to condensation (and this causes muffins to get soggy AND moldy).
STEP TWO: Next, place a sheet of paper towels on the bottom of a large, lidded storage container. You can also use gallon sized ziptop bags with a sheet of paper towel inside.
The paper towel layers will help absorb any excess moisture that is released from the muffins and help prevent them from becoming soggy.
STEP THREE: Transfer the muffins to the paper towel lined container or bag.
STEP FOUR: Lay another paper towel on top of the muffins.
Depending on how deep your container is, you may be able to fit more than one layer of these orange chocolate chip muffins. In this case, repeat the process – always end with a paper towel on top of the last layer of muffins. A bag will likely fit only one layer.
STEP FIVE: Lastly, place the lid on the container (or zip the bag) and store the muffins at room temperature.
Freezing Instructions for this Orange Chocolate Chip Muffin Recipe
These Orange Chocolate Chip Muffins work great stored in the freezer! You can freeze them for up to 3 months in a freezer bag or freezer-safe container.
When ready to eat, place the muffins on the counter to thaw. I don’t recommend thawing them in the microwave due to the chocolate, but you can slightly warm them after thawing if you’d like
