Chia seeds are edible seeds belonging to a plant in the mint family. They are used culinarily because of their ability to absorb water and their nutritional benefits. They’re a great thickening agent!
What are the Nutritional Benefits of Chia Seeds?
This chia jam is a delicious way to enjoy the many health benefits of chia seeds!
Chia seeds can improve digestion due to their ability to absorb water and their high fiber content.
They are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids which can help to reduce inflammation and promote brain health.
Healthy chia seeds also contain several important vitamins and minerals including magnesium which helps to support sleep, muscle contraction and the heart, and vitamin K which is necessary for blood clotting, bone health and cognitive health.
Chia Jam Ingredient Substitutions

However, if you do choose to make substitutions in this recipe for homemade chia jam, I recommend only making one substitute at a time so you don’t have a building effect of multiple poor substitutions.

Cook until raspberries are no longer whole and they begin to bubble, about 10 minutes. You can help them break down by using the spatula to get desired texture.
Add chia seeds and stevia to the pan. Stir immediately until chia seeds are well incorporated and remove from heat.

Raspberry Chia Jam FAQs
Got questions about how to make this easy raspberry jam recipe? Here are the answers to a few commonly asked questions. Feel free to leave any other questions in the comments on this post and I’ll respond with answers.
Can I Use Fresh Raspberries Instead of Frozen?
Absolutely! This chia jam is the perfect recipe to make if you have gone raspberry picking or purchased a lot of fresh berries at the farmer’s market.
Fresh raspberries will work fine in this recipe but will take longer to break down and you may need to mash them to get your preferred texture. A potato masher works well for this.
Can I Substitute Another Fruit in this Chia Jam?
Yes, you can definitely try a different type of fruit! Try making this chia jam with any berry, juicy fruit (peaches!), or a combination. Here are some ideas:
- strawberry chia seed jam
- mixed berry chia seed jam
- blueberry chia seed jam
- peach chia seed jam
For fruits larger than raspberries, you will want to cut them up in smaller pieces.
What Other Type of Sweetener Can I Use?
Monk Fruit Sweetener or erythritol are other great options. You will likely need about 2 tablespoons if the sweetener measures 1:1 with sugar.
Feel free to vary the amount of sugar, however. I highly recommend sweetening to taste as everyone has different preferences!
If you’re not concerned about the net carbs or grams of sugar, you can use regular granulated sugar. Start with 1/2 tablespoon and sweeten to taste.
Can I Substitute Flax Seeds for the Chia Seeds?
This is not recommended. Although flax seeds can often be used interchangeably with chia seeds, we are really relying on the ability of the chia seed to hold 10+ times its weight in water to gelatinize and create just the right texture for the jam.
Is Low Carb Chia Jam Healthy?
Yes! Chia jam is a great lower carb option for people who love using jam, plus this recipe has added nutritional benefits thanks to the chia seeds!
