How to Make Chocolate Tarts
Although this recipe looks like it has quite a few steps, it is actually not too difficult to prepare. Here’s a quick overview of the process with step-by-step photos:
Make Chocolate Tart Crust
While the tart itself is a no-bake filling, you do have to blind bake the crust for a few minutes before adding the filling.
- First, you’ll prepare the tart crust by processing Oreos and melted butter in the bowl of a food processor.
- Then, press into the bottom and up the sides of the pan; bake the crust.
Prepare the Tart Filling
While the crust is baking and cooling, prepare the filling:
- Cook the sugar and eggs on the stove.
- Then, add the chocolate, vanilla, and butter. The mixture should be thick once combined and the sugar completely dissolved.
- After that, make whipped cream. Then stir the chocolate mixture into the whipped cream.
- Pour mixture into the prepared crust, spread, and refrigerate until firm.
Make Whipped Cream Topping
You will top the chilled tart with whipped cream just before serving:
- Beat the heavy cream with vanilla until soft peaks form.
- Then, add the powdered sugar and beat until stiff.
- Spread the whipped cream on top of the chilled chocolate tart.
The above is simply a quick summary of this chocolate tart recipe. Check out the full recipe in the free printable recipe card at the bottom of this post for all the detailed instructions.

You can garnish this delicious chocolate dessert however you like, but I recommend garnishing it with either shaved chocolate or chocolate curls.

Other Ideas:
- fresh raspberries – chocolate and raspberries are beautiful together.
- dried orange slices – especially if you want to add some orange zest to the chocolate filling!
Tips for Making Chocolate Tarts
- Purchase good quality baking chocolate. You don’t want to use cheap chocolate or chocolate chips when making this recipe.
- When making the tart filling, stir the egg and sugar mixture constantly while it cooks, otherwise you may end up with a scrambled egg mess.
- Make sure the granulated sugar has completely dissolved as you cook the chocolate filling before stirring the chocolate mixture into the whipped cream, otherwise the filling will be grainy.
- Chill the tart for a minimum of 8 hours. You want the tart to be completely set so that it doesn’t fall apart when cut.

Do I have to use a tart pan?
No, you can also prepare this using a 9-inch pie plate (standard depth, not deep dish).
Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes! It needs to chill for at least 8 hours, so plan to make the chocolate tart in advance of when you want to serve the dessert.
However, you want to make the whipped cream topping just before serving the tart, otherwise it will deflate.
What is the best way to make whipped cream last?
If you want to make the entire pie ahead of time, you’ll need to make stabilized whipped cream instead of regular whipped cream – stabilized Whipped Cream holds its shape for longer than traditional whipped cream.
Learn how to stabilize whipped cream with gelatin, plus 4 other easy methods! Stabilizing whipped cream with gelatin will allow you to make the whipped cream topping up to a day in advance.
Once you serve the tart, stabilized whipped cream will last for up to 2 hours when sitting at room temperature.

- 4 Eggs
- 8 ounces Chocolate, chopped
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

Instructions
Recipe Prep
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line the bottom of the tart pan with parchment paper cut to the size of the pan.
Making the Chocolate Tart Crust
- Add the Oreos to the bowl of a food processor. Secure the lid and process the cookies until they are crumbs. Remove the lid, scrape down the sides if needed, and replace the lid.
- Slowly pour the butter through the food processor chute, while processing, until the mixture is combined and grainy.
- Add the cookie crumb mixture to the tart pan. Press the crumb mixture down into the bottom and up the sides of the pan.
- Transfer the tart pan to the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes. Then, remove and let cool to room temperature.
Preparing the Pie Filling
- While the crust is baking and cooling, prepare the filling.
- Combine the granulated sugar and beaten eggs in a medium sized saucepan over medium-low heat.
- Stir the mixture constantly while cooking until the sugar begins to dissolve and the mixture has thickened (it should coat the back of a spoon).
- Reduce heat to low. Add the chocolate and vanilla extract, continuing to stir constantly, until the chocolate has melted and the mixture is well combined and the sugar is completely dissolved.
- Stir in the butter until melted. Remove from heat, transfer to a mixin bowl, and set aside.
- Add the heavy cream to a chilled non-reactive bowl.
- Whisk using an electric mixture until the cream holds a loose peak. A soft peak will hold a lazy curve when the beater or whisk is held upside down.
- Then, sprinkle the powdered sugar on top of the whipped cream and continue beating until stiff peaks are formed.
Assembling the Chocolate Tart
- Add the whipped cream to the chocolate mixture, slowly stirring it until very well combined.
- Transfer the chocolate tart filling to the pie dish and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, until stiff
Preparing the Whipped Cream Topping
- Just before serving, prepare the whipped cream topping.
- Combine the heavy cream and vanilla or vanilla bean paste in a chilled non-reactive bowl.
- Whisk using an electric mixture until the cream holds a loose peak. A soft peak will hold a lazy curve when the beater or whisk is held upside down.
- Then, sprinkle the sugar on top of the whipped cream and continue beating until stiff peaks are formed.
Serving the Chocolate Tart
- Spread the whipped cream on top of the chilled pie. Garnish with shaved chocolate or chocolate curls.
