Chocolate Covered Bananas

School is out in most places and warmer weather has arrived. The sounds of the street are filled with children’s laughter and the catchy jingle of the ice cream man.
Stop there parents — you won’t need to shell out for overpriced and unhealthy treats anymore. Instead, try this cheaper make-at-home cold summer treat, a great way to get healthy fruit into our kids with a little something special.
This is a fun project for kids to help with. They will enjoy coming up with interesting ways of decorating their own “popsicle.” Who doesn’t love an ice cold treat when it’s hot outside?
Ingredients to Make Chocolate Covered Bananas
This recipe for chocolate covered bananas is so easy! You’ll only need these 3 simple ingredients:
- Bananas
- Dark Chocolate
- Coconut Oil

Tools and Supplies
You’ll need a few kitchen tools to prepare this chocolate banana pop recipe. Here’s what I recommend having on hand before getting started:
- Cutting Board and Knife – to cut the bananas in half.
- Popsicle Sticks – to stick in the bananas.
- Kitchen Scale – to weigh the chocolate.
- Measuring Spoons – to measure the coconut oil.
- Small Saucepan – to melt the chocolate.
- Parchment Paper – to line the baking sheet.
- Baking Sheet – to freeze the bananas on.
- Tall, Narrow Jar or Glass – to fill with melted chocolate for dipping the bananas in.
- Plastic Squeeze Bottle – to drizzle white chocolate on the dipped bananas, if desired.

Chocolate Banana Pops
This is a fun project for kids to help with. They will enjoy coming up with interesting ways of decorating their own “popsicle.” Who doesn’t love an ice-cold treat when it’s hot outside?
Ingredients
- 3 Bananas, firm but ripe
- 7 ounces dark chocolate (such as Ghirardelli 60% Cacao Bittersweet Chocolate), chopped
- 3 tablespoons Coconut Oil
White Chocolate Drizzle (optional)
- 3 1/2 ounces White Chocolate, chopped
- 1 1/2 tablespoons Coconut Oil
For Decorating (optional)
- Rainbow Sprinkles
- Chocolate Sprinkles
- Chopped Nuts
- Chopped Freeze Dried Berries
Instructions
Preparing the Bananas
- Peel the bananas and cut each in half. Discard the peel.
- Push a popsicle stick part way through the cut end of the banana so it looks like a popsicle.
- Set the popsicles on a freezer safe plastic plate or baking sheet, and place them in the freezer. Freeze until solid.
- Having the bananas cold will help the chocolate harden faster.
Preparing the Chocolate Coating
- Combine the oil and the dark chocolate in a small saucepan
- Heat over low heat, stirring periodically, just until the mixture is melted and comes together.
- Transfer the melted chocolate mixture to a tall glass or cup - one that is deep enough to accommodate the bananas, but preferably skinny so that the chocolate fills the glass.
- Let chocolate cool until it is room temperature to the touch, but still liquid, about 5-10 minutes.
Making the White Chocolate Drizzle (optional)
- Combine the oil and the white chocolate in a small saucepan
- Heat over low heat, stirring periodically, just until the mixture is melted and comes together.
- Transfer the white chocolate mixture to a plastic squeeze bottle.
- Cool until room temperature, but still liquid.
To Dip the Bananas
- Lay a sheet of parchment paper on a baking sheet.
- Take 1 banana out of the freezer at a time. Dip the frozen bananas in the chocolate, making sure to coat all sides.
- Hold the banana over the glass to allow any excess chocolate to drip off.
Decorating the Chocolate Dipped Bananas
With Sprinkles or Other Toppings:
- Immediately (before the chocolate has hardened) decorate the banana with sprinkles, chopped nuts, or other items if desired.
- Hold the banana by the popsicle stick until the chocolate has hardened to the touch.
- Place dipped bananas on a parchment paper lined baking sheet while you repeat with the remaining bananas.
- If you want to decorate the chocolate dipped bananas with a white chocolate drizzle, let the dark chocolate harden first.
- Then, transfer the banans back to the freezer so that the exterior is cold again,
- Once cold, remove from freezer and place on the parchment lined baking sheet.
- Using the plastic squeeze bottle, drizzle the bananas with the white chocolate mixture. Let the chocolate harden, then flip and repeat with the other side if desired.
With White Chocolate Drizzle:
Freezing the Chocolate Dipped Bananas
- Then, transfer the dipped bananas to an airtight container in the freezer after dipping for 45–60 minutes, or until the centers are solid.
- Enjoy!

I had something similar to this when we were at Heritage Days in our city (a big cultural event with many different foods). Except it was raining and windy and we were just trying to use up all of our tickets before the storm moved it … not as enjoyable! Now, if it were a hot day and I were laying by a pool somewhere, a banana pop would be heaven! And definitely a hit with kids! I'll have to try that on my niece and nephew!K
