Freezing Grapes
Grapes were recently on sale crazy cheap at the grocery store.
One of my friends knows how much Madeline and I love our green smoothies. She mentioned that green grapes were great in green smoothies.
Since I’m trying to cut my grocery bill down a little, I decided to buy a couple bags of green grapes to freeze for smoothies (green grapes are a lot cheaper than the frozen pineapple we usually like to throw in).
Freezing grapes is super simple.
Frozen Grapes
The first time around, I didn’t want to deal with any prep so I just stuck the grapes, stems and all, in a gallon-sized freezer bag. Then, I shoved the whole thing in the freezer.
It wasn’t too bad, but there was the extra step in the morning of pulling the grapes off the stem and washing them before putting them in our smoothies (we like a combo of green grapes, frozen peaches or mangos, fresh spinach, and orange juice).
The next week, green grapes were on sale again for the same price. I bought a couple more bags and followed the instructions I’ve shard below. This method for
freezing grapes is super easy, time saving for morning smoothies, and tasty!
BONUS: Frozen grapes make a great, cold snack on a hot day. Kids love them!
Tools Needed to Freeze Grapes
You’ll need a few kitchen tools to freeze grapes. Here’s what I recommend having on hand before getting started:
- Colander – to drain the grapes after washing.
- Paper Towels or Kitchen Towel – to dry the grapes after washing.
- Baking Sheet – to freeze the grapes on.
- Parchment Paper – to line the baking sheet with before adding the grapes.
- Airtight Container or Freezer Bag – to store the frozen grapes.
How to Freeze Grapes
I’m almost embarrassed to tell you how to freeze grapes, because it’s so easy! Frozen grapes take some time to harden in the freezer, but otherwise the process is painless. Here’s how to freeze grapes:
- Remove the grapes from their stems. Discard stems.
- Place grapes in a colander. Rinse well.
- Line a large baking tray with an absorbent towel.
- Lay the grapes on top of the towel and allow to dry.
- When the grapes are completely dry, transfer to another baking sheet.
- Place the entire baking sheet in the freezer and freeze until the grapes are solid.
- While the grapes are freezing, label a freezer bag with date and contents.
- Transfer the frozen grapes to a large gallon sized freezer bag.

Can I Use Any Type of Grape?
Yep! You can freeze any type of grape. Green grapes are a little more tart, whereas red are slightly sweeter. You can also freeze grapes a few at a time whenever you have some in your fridge that are about to go bad.
Can I Freeze Grapes with Seeds?
Seedless grapes are best for freezing since you don’t want to crunch down on a frozen seed. But if you only have grapes with seeds in them, you can always cut the seeds out before placing them in the freezer.
With that said, you don’t need to remove the seeds if you’ll be adding the frozen grapes to smoothies or another treat you’ll be blending up.
Just note that grape seeds are sometimes quite bitter, so they may affect the flavor slightly!
Frozen Grapes Uses
Besides smoothies, a few of my favorite ways to use frozen grapes include:
- As ice cubes (so they don’t water down your beverage of choice)
- In a slushie (blend frozen grapes with a little juice or water)
- Straight from the freezer bag
- Atop frozen yogurt

Can you just rinse grapes then place in freezer baggies to put in the freezer?

You can if you would like, but I don’t like to do it that way because the water surrounding the grapes will freeze and coat the grapes in ice. I like to rinse them and dry them first.

Freeze loads of fruits, that are about to spoil, in this manner. Chop them up, spread them out on a parchment lined roasting pan and freeze. Once frozen, place in a freezer bag and toss back in the freezer.
This evening I had some beets, carrots and cucumber that I puréed and then portioned out in ice cube trays (2 for $1 @ DollarTree) once frozen, I’ll pop the veggie cubes out of the trays, place in a freezer bag and put back in the freezer.
I will use these cubes in smoothies – hides a healthy veggie serving in my smoothie and won’t make it green :-P. Cauliflower is another good veggie to hide in fruit smoothies.
