Making Sourdough Croutons
These Homemade Garlic Sourdough Croutons came to be after finding a loaf of totally stale sourdough bread in the pantry.
It turns out I’m not really very good at remembering to use the sandwich bread when my husband is gone on a business trip.
I just didn’t get through a whole loaf in time. I really did not want to throw it away. What a waste, right?
With soup on the menu for dinner I decided I would make some Homemade Garlic Sourdough Croutons.
It was a great way to use up the stale bread. My plan was to top the soup with the croutons since I didn’t have time to bake homemade bread or rolls that night.

These delicious buttery garlic croutons baked up in a pinch.
We loved them topped on our hot bowls of soup. Madeline loved just popping a few in her mouth and crunching. I loved not throwing away that half a loaf of bread.
I think that means we were all winners.

How to Make Sourdough Croutons
- First, you’ll preheat the oven.
- While the oven preheats, cut the sourdough into cubes.
- Then, mix the garlic with olive oil.
- Drizzle the garlic and olive oil over the bread cubes; toss to combine and coat evenly.
- Bake the croutons, rotating halfway through, until crunchy and colden.

- Croutons can be made up to 3 days in advance and stored in an airtight container.
- The croutons must cool completely to room temperature before storing, otherwise condensation will develop in the container and the croutons will become soggy

Homemade Sourdough Croutons
These Homemade Sourdough Croutons came to be after finding a loaf of totally stale sourdough bread in the pantry.
Ingredients
- ½ loaf Sourdough Bread
- 2 cloves Garlic
- ¼ cup Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
- While the oven preheats, cut the sourdough bread into 1 inch cubes. Place the bread on a baking sheet large enough to fit all of the bread in a single layer.
- Smash the garlic, then very finely mince it (alternatively press it through a garlic press). Add the garlic to a small bowl with the olive oil. Stir until combined.
- Drizzle the garlic and olive oil mixture over the cubed bread, then toss to coat evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10 - 15 minutes, stirring halfway through so they brown evenly.
- After toasting, remove from the oven and let cool completely before adding to salad.

These can also be made using melted butter or a mix of melted butter and olive oil if you prefer a buttery flavor to your croutons.
